“Vegan Mob comprises all of the things that inspire me; a love of my city, a love of hip-hop, and of course, a love of good-ass food.”—Toriano Gordon

Toriano Gordon, the chef behind Vegan Mob, grew up sharing soul food with his family and friends. When he began eating vegan after wanting to improve his health, he was nostalgic for those childhood flavors, so he spent hours painstakingly recreating them from scratch. His innovative dishes became the backbone of Vegan Mob, a Bay Area original that draws in vegans and carnivores alike.

In his first cookbook, he shares favorites from the restaurant as well as new recipes, inviting readers to try crowd-pleasing favorites like Brisket, Smackaroni, and Mobba’Q Baked Beans. In an homage to his youth in the Fillmoe (not Fillmore) and his San Francisco and Oakland communities, he also draws inspiration from a multitude of cuisines with recipes like La La Lumpia, Mafia Mobsta Noodles aka Garlic Noodles, Mob Lasagna, and Mob Taco Bowls, all made accessible for the home cook.

Vegan Mob also takes you out of the kitchen and into Toriano’s life, highlighting his many family connections to the Bay Area and his connection to Bay Area rap and music. With inspirational advice from Toriano, vibrant photographs, and tons of energy, Vegan Mob is an invitation for everyone to come to the table and enjoy a meal together.

    More than a cook book
Very detailed and informative with high quality pictures. Great cook book for someone like me who loves soul food while seeking a healthier diet. I like that it’s very detailed when it comes to ingredients. Yet, a bit disappointed that some dishes require so many. Great for people who love to cook. My son loves Vegan Mob so I’m buying another book as a gift for him.

Soul Food for Vegans + Adventurous eaters
The foods of Vegan Mob are Southern adjacent with a California flair and cater to a community of people seeking comfort or soul foods created for a vegan lifestyle. The author and creator, Toriano Gordon, has made it his mission – or perhaps manifested, according to him – this cuisine for his vegan lifestyle that has now evolved from his restaurant into this cookbook. Vegan and barbecue are not synonymous, but this piqued my curiosity in working to understand the subculture of this dedicated lifestyle and the concept. One of the best ways to learn is through food: making it, sharing it, and (hopefully) enjoying it. As a curious person, I always enjoy challenging myself and trying new things.
I should note that I am not vegan, nor had I heard of the Vegan Mob™️’s Oakland restaurant before receiving this cookbook.

My first obstacle was sourcing ingredients. Grocery stores generally have several vegan options, but I needed to visit an array to find the exact ingredients. Veganism is a dedicated lifestyle, so I stayed true to the recipes and ingredients.

The first recipe I made is the Smackeroni + Cheese, an obvious choice because it is familiar and I could feed it to my family.

I sometimes make the non-vegan variety from scratch, so the labor of love is not an issue for me. The Daiya cheeses melted as nicely into a creamy roux. What did smack me about the Smackeroni was the sheer quantity. The recipe states it feeds 4-6 people. It should have said it serves a family for 4-6 days. My kids wouldn’t eat it, so they left it to the adults. Even then it’s an immense quantity of food. It filled a 9×13 dish with overflow. The image in the book also didn’t resemble my outcome. While the dish is rich and creamy, the recipe has nothing red in it, nor the sprinkle of paprika or chili in the photo. We ended up doctoring it up with chili crisp for additional flavor.

I’d like to try the Mobba Q spaghetti next. I’ve sourced half the ingredients, but seeing the sheer quantity of the Mob sauce (8 cups!) makes me realize I need to either scale down the recipe or invite some people over. It should be noted, that there are no recipes for faux-proteins, you are purchasing Better Chew, Beyond Meat, or Impossible Burger, and the like to doctor up.

The book has page numbers tucked near the binding seam, which is not user-friendly. The Mob / Mobby branding feels gimmicky. It runs thick through the pages and no opportunity was lost to promote that down to the blingy jewelry in the photos! I’m also probably just old and detest the ‘influencer’ culture. This book gave me a lot to unpack and think about. Vegan Mob fulfills a need uniquely by introducing a new evolution of vegan food to people. Does vegan equate to healthier? That is an ongoing question. That also doesn’t appear to be the intent here.Readers need to be comfortable and willing to dedicate time to sourcing ingredients, preparing referential recipes, sorting out serving portions through trial and error, frying foods, and having access to a smoker to delve all the way in.

This food will appeal to those accustomed to sourcing more obscure ingredients to recreate their old favorite dishes.
High-5 to both the author and vegans for that tenacity.Ten Speed Press provided me with a free copy of this book; the opinions and photos are my own.

    Pull up on his baby!
I’m so glad to have this book. This book is a great investment in what I like to eat. I’m so happy Toriano made this book so now I can make a dish here at the house for my family. Theyll be surprised on what they’re tasting tonight and what they’ve been missing. Vegan mob is a 5 Star Food place if you like plant-based soul food meals like me. it’s the mob.!!!

    Above & beyond expectations
My wife and I are pivoting our eating into veganism – this book is so full of inspiration WOW! Not only does it offer so many delicious recipes, it’s got the most beautiful layout, art and photography. It feels like a hug in book form! We plan to give this as a gift for friends who are choosing to be vegan with us. It is downright gorgeous.

    Great Story
There’s a lot of heart and soul in the unique story of Toriano Gordon, his family, his restaurant Vegan Mob, the San Francisco Fillmoe (Fillmore) area and Oakland communities. And, the cookbook shares a good lesson on the rewards of following your heart and passions with positivity, creativity and lots of hard work. This cookbook is filled with vegan analogs of favorite BBQ & soul food dishes. Often, the vegan version’s flavors, appearance and textures are achieved through clever uses of Asian, Mexican and Italian ingredients. That approach is a reflection of the Bay Area and Toriano Gordon’s quest for excellence, comfort, good health and openness. Ten Speed Press provided me with a free copy of this book; the opinions are my own.Very helpful to those of us still learning and trying to eat less meat and animal products with delicious results, is the mention of brand name products that have been tested in the recipes already. There’s a nice variety of dishes and special emphasis on condiments and sauces. Most of the recipes, however, utilize fake meat, which I am not interested in eating. I did try the Smackaroni – the vegan macaroni and cheese, which did not utilize a simulated meat. It was extremely rich, creamy and thick but lacked depth of flavor. Lots of hot sauce helped.
