An accessible guide for vegan, vegetarian, or veg-curious parents from the dietitian duo behind online community Plant-Based Juniors®–includes a bonus chapter on feeding infants up to six months!

More of us are turning to plant-focused diets for our health and the health of the environment. But there haven’t been reliable, evidence-based resources out there for a new generation of compassionate, conscientious parents–until now. The Plant-Based Baby and Toddler is your go-to resource, offering easy-to-digest nutritional facts and guidelines that aren’t available elsewhere, with a special focus on the most important period of a child’s life when it comes to developing good eating habits: infancy and toddlerhood.

Whitney and Alex discuss:

   • the PB3 plate: a visual guide to structuring meals that are nutritionally balanced–1/3 fruits and vegetables; 1/3 legumes, nuts and seeds; and 1/3 grains and starches–and easy to adapt for the entire family
   • how to meet needs for critical nutrients such as iron
   • a primer on both traditional purees and the baby-led weaning/feeding approach
   • strategies for dealing with challenges such as picky eaters
   • sorting fact from fiction when it comes to nondairy milks and other substitutes
   • 50+ plant-based recipes created specifically for stages from first bites to age three
As dietitians and moms, Whitney and Alex pored over nutrition journals and called on the experts to learn how to provide their babies with the best diet possible. They found that plant-based diets are associated with a reduced risk of obesity, decreased cholesterol levels, and increased fruit and vegetable intake; in short, not only are they safe for kids, they’re pretty freaking awesome.

Makes 3 cups 1 cup frozen peas, cooked then cooled 1 large ripe avocado, pitted and chopped 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 cup finely chopped veggies of choice ¼ cup finely chopped fresh cilantro 1 clove minced fresh garlic or 1 teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon sea salt, optional ¼ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper, optional

Confetti Guacamole

This confetti guacamole is a great way to pack in the veggies. We like to add bell peppers, carrots, kale, and tomatoes, but feel free to mix it up! Use a food processor to get vegetables uniformly chopped in record speed.

Place peas in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until the peas are smooth. In a medium bowl, use a fork to mash the peas, avocado, lime juice, finely chopped veggies, cilantro, minced garlic, and salt/pepper, if using.Serve on a preloaded spoon for baby-led weaners, with pita bread or black bean taquitos, or on its own!

    GET THIS BOOK!!!
I can’t get o er how good this book is- it far surpassed my expectations. As a desperate mama of a picky 2.5 year old and *slightly* less picky 1.5 year old, I needed HELP with healthy plant based food ideas as I have just transitioned myself to plant-based diet a few months ago; I’m a newbie! It’s time to get my toddlers in a healthier place now too. This book is incredible. It provides so much information on how to build a healthy plate, includes research and makes me feel so much better because I honestly do not have the time (or desire) to become a registered dietician myself right now. This book includes everything you need to know (probably way more than you need to know, but there’s great callouts that highlight the important parts, and I love that I have it as a reference book to go back to if I have questions on anything in particular). The use of pictures/visual inspiration and plate examples, easy to read reference charts, and beautifully photographed recipes are perfectly presented. I don’t know how to say this, but, I also really loved the overall tone of the book too. It doesn’t come across demeaning or judgmental to make you feel like crap for feeding your kids less-than-ideal options. It’s very positive and helpful.I NEVER write reviews, especially for books, but this book is so helpful I could just cry in gratitude. Thank you thank you 🙌 I feel so much more confident and well-equipped to feed my sweet babes to set them up for a positive long term health trajectory, and that just means the world to me. So very grateful. BUY THIS BOOK!!! ❤️

    Evidenced based guidance!
This book is a fantastic resource for parents who are looking to raise a healthy child (plant-based or not). Some parts are dense with information but they have quick snippets for busy parents. I love the recipes as well. I highly recommend this book!

    Good Resource for Plant-based Littles
Great resource, our book is already messy and well-used. I have yet to be able to sit down and read all the nutrition information, but I’ve been able to flip through and find information I had questions about. The PB3 plate (or whatever it’s called, sorry) graphic is confusing, and I still need to sit down and read more about it to fully understand it, but I’ve been plant-based for over four years, so I get the gist. I’ve been able to glean some great info as a first-time parent for my plant-based son, and am hoping to learn even more as I read. By the way, if you’re looking for supplements, I’m in the US, but the UK company Vegetology has great prices and we use the liquid Omega (about 1.25ml measured by medicine syringe/day) and Vitamin-D3 spray (3 sprays/day) for our 15-month old. We can put them in a smoothie or a little cup of organic, unsweet, fortified soy milk, or spray the vitamin D on food we know he’ll eat. Iodine is trickier, but we do the best we can by using 2 drops of the Mary Ruth’s liquid in a small measuring cup with a little water, and then sucking it all up with a medicine syringe and dividing that amount into three to give him over three days (we store it covered in the fridge in the little measuring cup). Really annoying, but it’s the best solution I can see from the information for a more consistent dose without trying to use iodized salt every day in who knows what amount to get the right dose. Someone needs to create a good infant iodine. Anyway, other than that, the recipes have been great for us to try and add variety to little man’s diet, and I just wish the book had a bit more sturdy cover with flaps to use as bookmarks so it didn’t get as messy and banged up as fast, especially with my little guy helping in the kitchen.

Best plant base guide for my little ones!
I love this book! My family and me have been following a plant based diet for over 3 years. We had to figure everything out by ourselves, but there is so much information out there that I was confused, mostly about what kind of supplements my little ones need. And I needed some food inspiration as well! This book is all in one. Half of the book is a guide on plant based diet for babies and toddlers and it covers things like how to approach picky eating, best supplements based on your needs, food combinations based on nutrients for best absorption… it covers so much information I didn’t know! The other half of the book are recipes. I can’t tell how good they are since I haven’t cooked any yet since I’m still reading the guide but I’m sure they are delicious since I’ve made some of their Instagram recipes before and they’ve all been a hit in my house!!

    Pretty Good
The book is divided into information and recipes. The info section is generally interesting and well-written, with a lot of practical advice. I’d agree with what other reviewers said about citations—the book has a list of references but no in-text citations. If you want to know what research their claims are based on, you have to go on a bit of a reference hunt. Also some information is conflicting, especially in the allergy section. Definitely consult a medical professional if you need real advice.Pasta dishes and pancakes are stand-out recipes, while the bean muffins were a total flop. The recipes are not really organized and there’s no table of contents, so it’s a bit hard to find the ones you want. For some reason (no citation given) the authors claim that “babies don’t like spicy food”; I find myself adding red chili flakes frequently because my baby is not interested in bland food. The final section of the book would ideally contain the various cooking and nutrition charts scattered about the first section, but instead it has some other random charts, again with no table of contents. Maybe they will hire a new editor for the second edition and the book will be better organized with correct citations.

This book is an incredible resource – I bought it because of the excerpt where the authors relayed misconceptions doctors may have about plant-based diets for children as I wanted to arm myself with information. I am so lucky I decided to purchase this – it talks in great detail about nutrient needs and how to meet them at each stage of your baby’s development, and even talks later about the psychology of how to raise an adventurous eater. It does have recipes at the end but they feel like a bonus – the technical information the book outlines is gold and provides much-needed guidance to parents trying to figure out how to feed a plant-based child. 10000% recommend!!

This book is brilliant. It’s annoying 2 reviewers have knocked stars off because one didn’t read the description of the book and another mentions not giving quinoa before 2 which is completely untrue! I feel it’s unfair on the book to take stars off because you’ve not done your research, eg a quick Google.Anyway, the book is brilliant and really reassuring. So much information and simple tweaks such as adding vit c foods with iron rich foods for max absorption. Very informative but still easy reading without being overbearing. Fascinating stuff!

I really wanted to like this book as being a plant-based mum I wanted to offer my little one lots of yummy, healthy treats. I made a few recipes from the book now and somehow they never came out as expected. I just took the veggie omelette cups out of the oven and they are just a disappointment. I also had to add much more water as I could not process the mixture with my Vitamix to become smooth.I also tried the BLW banana pancakes which also didn’t work. One point to know is that they use quinoa in some of their recipes – I read in another book that quinoa should not be given to babies younger than 2 years.I really like the nutrition section and the style of the book – so 3 stars in total.

  10. Ninaalinde

Absolutely living for the recipes in this book. It’s also so good they go over which nutrients and in what amounts they require At each age. It’s good they tell you that you will require supplements for plant based babies and don’t pretend that they won’t need them.Lovely the recipes have “family” alterations so adults & older kids can eat and enjoy the meals as well. Very happy I bought this one.
