Life changing and incredible value
After years of trying a variety of kibbles, I had written my dog off as having a sensitive stomach, but after hearing about raw food for dogs I started looking into it. At first the price per pound of every raw food was shocking but then I realized since the water is taken out in the freeze drying process and you have to add it back in (very easy), you actually end up with about 5 lbs of food for every 1 lb you buy, so the price comes out to about ~$2.6 per pound which is about a dollar more expensive than the old kibble I was buying but less expensive than all the other raw food brands and worth it for my dog’s health (longer and better quality life and less medical bills!). The food has a very short ingredient list, just salmon (wild caught), pinto beans, hempseeds, coconut, pumpkin, kale, blueberries, turmeric and vitamins, all human-grade! It is like food that I would make myself for him if I was a better mom and had more time, or like food I would pay $100 a month for from a fancy startup, instead it is almost the same price and convenience as the kibble I was using! Immediately after switching to this food my dog’s poop (for me a strong indicator of his health and the health of his diet) went from light colored and mushy (the kind thats very difficult to pickup) to firm, brown and long. He also LOVES it. He is a bulldog he loves to eat but never before now have I seen him push the bowl towards me to ask for more and keep going back to lick the bowl again after having licked it clean. The food is also very convenient for me. Because it is freeze-dried it weighs so much less and takes up so much less space than traditional kibble, the bag is resealable, and all you have to do is add water. Somebody left a review saying the food looked like watery soup. This person just didn’t follow the instructions. After adding the appropriate amount of hot water the food looks like soup but you are supposed to wait 5 minutes for it to rehydrate and then it is like a meaty stew. I also saw some commenters saying this is not sufficient food on its own and just meant to be a meal mixer because it doesn’t have enough protein (??) but the food is a meal on its own and it has more protein than the blue buffalo kibble i was feeding him and more protein than the AAFCO standard. Plus it is super healthy- it is anti-inflammatory and inflammation in the body is the root of all maladies. I am so impressed by this food and the instant difference it has made in my dog and I will not shut up about it to all my friends who have dogs. You should definitely try out this food!

MY DOGS LOVE THIS
Every morning now, I grab a handful of the dried Grandma Lucy’s dried recipe and add it to their kibble. I add several tablespoons of water and mix it up. The dried powder clings to the kibble, and then…..it all disappears like magic!I have four small dogs with 3 of them being Cairn terriers, one an elderly dachshund. The dachshund is never a problem, she is an eager eater…..but the Cairns can be reluctant eaters some mornings. The Grandma Lucy’s real meat addition, even dried, makes all the difference in the world. Now I cluster their bowls like a family meal, and whatever that dynamic is, the entire pack devours their meal! Just magic what a difference it made with no coaxing required.

My dog was on the Macanna Salmon food for about six months. It created a terrible case of gingivitis as the foods sticks to the base of his teeth and gum line. I brush my dogs teeth every day and it was not enough to prevent this. It has healed now that I have stopped feeding this food.I also noticed that the bag appeared to have very little salmon compared to the hemp hearts and the beans. I called Macanna twice to see what the ratio of each item was in the bag and they never answered my phone inquiries or my e-mail.The worst issue is that my dog lost weight so fast on this food. He lost over five pounds. I ended up feeding double the recommended amount and he was pooping 5x/day and the stool looked exactly like the food in the bag. It appeared as if it was not being digested. This was terrifying. I had my vet do a blood test and his labs came back with very high potassium in his blood.I made another phone call to Macanna and asked about the potassium and sodium levels in the food and they were unable to tell me. This is extremely important and I should have looked for this before buying this food. This had potential to make my dog gravely ill. Of course we stopped the food.Thank goodness the blood levels have returned to normal levels a month after stopping the Macanna Salmon. His stools have also returned to normal and he is at a healthy weight.PLEASE be sure to check everything you choose to feed your beloved pets. If it is not on the label give the company a call. If they are unable to tell you or will not tell you than find something else. It is not worth loosing your dog or cat over. I could have lost my dog. Ask your vet before changing their food just to be sure.

My senior dog eats this enthusiastically and that makes me very happy!
My 14 year old Chinese Crested can be a picky eater so it makes me very happy to see her get excited at mealtime. She cleans her bowl every time. I recently compared the ingredients with another similar food that costs twice as much. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the ingredients in Grandma Lucy’s compared well and convinced me to continue to use this food.

What happened to quality ?
Usually when I buy the 3 lb bag , it’s good and works for my senior dog . This time I decided to buy the bigger one and I noticed a difference in the food . I don’t know why but it smells different and my dog doesn’t seem to like it. Every time she eats it , she gets diarrhea . This used to be my go to food for her when she had diarrhea but I believe it’s become the cause . I’m not sure what makes this larger bag different from the small one but there clearly is a difference. I’mBummed since it’s so expensive and now I have so much left over that my dog cannot eat.
